چکیده

Editor – Vector resistance to insecticides has been highlighted by Kasap et al. in their comparative study relating to malaria in Turkey (1). In India, phlebotomine sandflies used to be considered highly susceptible to all insecticides; but indiscriminate use poses a problem of resistance, for example, in Bihar, where spraying with DDT has continued since 1976 (2). Resistance to DDT in Phlebotomus argentipes, a proven vector of Kala-azar in India, was reported for the first time in a village of Samastipur district (3). We therefore undertook a study in seven villages in Patna, Darbhanga, Samastipur, and Vaishali districts to ascertain the present trend of susceptibility of sandflies to DDT spraying in endemic areas of Bihar. Batches of 15–20 bloodfed and active half-gravid female adult sandflies were collected in the early morning by torchlight, with aspirators, and exposed toDDT4% for one hour. Their susceptibility status was determined by the WHO test kit, and mortality was recorded after 24 hours. All the sandflies dead or alive were identified (4). The temperature and humidity were maintained at 24+2 C and 75%, respectively. A village in Patna district, where no DDT spraying had been carried out for 25 years, was selected as a control. Effectiveness of the insecticide was found to be 100% in Patna and Samastipur districts. In Paswantola and Chakkatola villages (Darbhanga district) and Dakshinitola village (Vaishili district), vector mortality was 98.24%, 96.28% and 97.57%, respectively, whereas in another village in Vaishali (Ravidastola) susceptibility was 78.5% in 1998 and 71.42% in 1999. Our observations indicate that the leishmaniasis vector Ph. argentipes has developed resistance to DDT in an area of Bihar, in line with findings reported from Samstipur district (3). Further study is therefore required in endemic areas. n Ram Singh, Assistant Director R.K. Das, Chief Medical Officer S.K. Insecticide resistance in phlebotomine sandflies in Southeast Asia with emphasis on the Indian subcontinent

BACKGROUND Visceral leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar in India, is a global public health problem. In Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand are endemic for visceral leishmaniasis. The role of sandflies as the vector of kala-azar was first confirmed in 1942 in India. Insecticide resistance in Phlebotomus argentipes Annandale and Brunetti, the vector of...

Vector density and the control of kala-azar in Bihar, India.

Bihar, India has been in the grip of kala-azar for many years. Its rampant and severe spread has made life miserable in most parts of the state. Such conditions require a comprehensive understanding of this affliction. The numbers coming out of the districts prone to the disease in the north and south Ganges have provided us with several startling revelations, as there are striking uniformities...

Snowball Vs. House-to-House Technique for Measuring Annual Incidence of Kala-azar in the Higher Endemic Blocks of Bihar, India: A Comparison

BACKGROUND Visceral Leishmaniasis, commonly known as kala-azar, is widely prevalent in Bihar. The National Kala-azar Control Program has applied house-to-house survey approach several times for estimating Kala-azar incidence in the past. However, this approach includes huge logistics and operational cost, as occurrence of kala-azar is clustered in nature. The present study aims to compare effic...

Insecticide susceptibility of Phlebotomus argentipes & assessment of vector control in two districts of West Bengal, India

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Kala-azar or visceral leishmanisis (VL) is known to be endemic in several States of India including West Bengal (WB). Only meager information is available on the vector dynamics of its vector species, Phlebotomus argentipes particularly in relation to control measure from this State. Hence, a pilot study was undertaken to assess the control strategy and its impact on vec...

A new strategy for elimination of kala-azar from rural Bihar.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE Bihar State of India has been an endemic State for kala-azar. There has been many phases of DDT sprays for vector control. An outbreak of kala-azar occurred in Goanpura, 6 km from Patna, Bihar, in 2003. We undertook this study with a new approach of kala-azar elimination in this village with priority to treatment of cases followed by supplementation with supervised DDT sp...
